That’s the ultimate question, isn't it? The short, honest answer is: nobody truly knows. But depending on who you ask—a physicist or a philosopher—you get two very different, grounded takes.
1. The Physics Take: "Nothing" isn't what we think it is.
In modern physics, absolute "nothingness"—a complete absence of space, time, matter, and energy—doesn't really exist. Quantum field theory shows that even a total vacuum is bubbling with activity. Virtual particles pop in and out of existence constantly due to quantum fluctuations. Some physicists, like Lawrence Krauss, argue that quantum mechanical laws allow a universe to spontaneously spring out of "nothing" because quantum vacuums are naturally unstable. In short: "nothing" is unstable, so it turns into "something."
2. The Philosophical/Biological Take: Selection Bias.
If there were nothing, we wouldn't be here asking why there's something. The fact that we exist to ask the question means we could only ever find ourselves in a reality where "something" exists. Philosophers call this the anthropic principle. It doesn't explain how existence started, but it explains why our observation of existence is inevitable.
3. The Brutal Truth: It might just be a brute fact.
Philosopher Bertrand Russell famously suggested that the universe is just there, and that's all. It’s what logicians call a "brute fact"—an ultimate truth that doesn't have an underlying explanation.
Science can explain how complex things form from simpler things, but explaining why the fundamental rules of reality exist in the first place might lie beyond the reach of human logic. We might just have to accept that existence is the default baseline of reality.
